Black Lives Matter Memorial

Picture
Black Lives Matter Memorial, 2020. Laser-cut clear acrylic. 5.5"x 5.5"x 5.5"
After the revitalization of the BLM Movement during the summer of 2020, I chose to make a piece in memorial of the black men and women who lost their lives due to racial violence and inequity. This piece was a focus on the process as well as the finished piece. To make the piece, I made the choice to research every person whose name I did not recognize on the BLM webpage. I was shocked to see so many people whose stories were never shared with the rest of the world, despite the horror outlining their death. After learning about each person, I typed in each person's name into my program --no copy/paste-- to respect and recognize them as an individual.
The final product is meant to intrigue viewers as they come in close to read the names on the box, only to realize whose names are printed. It forces the viewer to confront the atrocities committed against these men and women, and inspire them to take action.
